Bishop of Scranton Celebrates Mass of the Holy Spirit for 125th Anniversary
The University of Scranton began a year-long celebration of its 125th anniversary with Mass of the Holy Spirit celebrated by Most Rev. Joseph Bambera, Bishop of the Diocese of Scranton, Sept. 5, in the Byron Recreation Complex.
The Mass of the Holy Spirit celebrated by Most Rev. Joseph Bambera, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Scranton, officially began of the campus community’s year-long celebration of the University’s 125th anniversary.
More than 1,000 students, faculty and staff attended the Mass on Sept. 5 in the Byron Recreation Complex.
“In reflecting upon the mission of The University of Scranton as a Catholic, Jesuit institution of higher learning, it is very clear that its ideals are rooted in service, a concern for the common good, and a commitment to promoting justice,” said Bishop Bambera in his Homily. “Indeed, the very spirituality of the Jesuit community that so permeates this University calls each of us ‘to engage under the standard of the Cross, in the crucial struggle of our time: the struggle for faith and that struggle for justice which it includes.’
”The Bishop advised students to “use your time at The University of Scranton well. Grow in wisdom and knowledge. But, also take care to recognize the reality of God in every relationship, situation and experience of life. And then respect and reflect that reality of God through your service of the lives God entrusts to your care.
”Bishop Bambera also thanked University President Kevin P. Quinn, S.J., the University’s Trustees, administrators, faculty and staff, both present and past, for the care given to the University.
“For 125 years, The University of Scranton has stood as a shining example of a Catholic university, and a beacon of hope and opportunity for many in our corner of the world and beyond,” said Bishop Bambera.
Father Quinn also recognized the “collective effort of diocesan priests, Xaverian Brothers, Christian Brothers, Jesuits and incomparable lay colleagues who inspired generations of students and alumni to excel beyond their imaginings and to see their place in the world through new eyes.”A luncheon immediately followed Mass, and commemorative 125th anniversary T-shirts were distributed.The University’s year-long 125th anniversary celebration will include exhibits, lectures and other events.
